Poetry Inspired from Theft

Local poet Scott Owens and other area poets will be reading original poems they wrote in response to AOA artwork at the auction finale Friday, February 29, 2008. Scott wrote this poem in response to the theft from the fundraiser.

Art Stolen from Benefit Show
Hickory, NC, February 21, 2008

So few appreciate, fewer buy
it comes as great surprise
when three paintings by a local artist
grow legs and walk away,
stranding AIDS patients,
abused women, abandoned pets.
Later, the artist looking at the blankness
on the wall imagines her lines
hanging in hostile halls, pictures
this deviant desperado of art,
can’t help but smile at the familiar,
love that risks freedom for possession.

AOA Items Stolen: Poet Offers Support

Three items were stolen from the Aroma of Art Silent Auction late Tuesday or early Wednesday. Taste Full Beans Coffeehouse made a police report but there are no leads. Local poet and AOA supporter Scott Owens offers his support. See his email below:

I know this doesn't have anything to do with Poetry Hickory, but, as unbelievable as this sounds, three pieces of art donated to the Aroma of Art fundraiser at Taste Full Beans were stolen today. Because the guys at Taste Full Beans have always generously supported Poetry Hickory and because the charities supported by the Aroma of Art are very worthy endeavors, I'd like to try to help recover the income that ALFA (AIDS Leadership Foothills-area Alliance), the Women's Resource Center, and the Humane Society will have lost due to this theft. The bids on the three items at the time they were stolen were up to a total of $80. I'm donating $30 to the Aroma of Art to recover some of that money. I invite anyone else interested in helping recover these funds to write a check to ALFA (they process all of the Aroma of Art income for the three groups) and drop it off at Taste Full Beans or send it to me if that's easier. My address is 838 4th Ave. Dr. NW, Hickory, NC 28601.

Thanks,
Scott
